| A Message From The Head of School |
|
 |
Founded in 1850 and originally known as Mr. Gunn’s School, The Gunnery today is
a dynamic boarding and day school enrolling 300 students. Frederick Gunn, its
founder, was a rugged individualist who believed that the strength of character
was the true goal of education. Five values informed his mission and endure
today as the cornerstones of the school: scholarship, integrity, respect,
responsibility and perseverance.
The Gunnery is an educational community that prizes intellectual adventure,
shared curiosity and the lively interplay of ideas. The faculty and I have
developed a demanding curriculum that will encourage you to learn as much as
possible about the fundamental questions of human existence, to strengthen the
skills of analysis and assessment, to become discerning thinkers and to develop
capacity for creativity. You will be asked always to do your best, to entertain
risk and sometimes to experience failure. The 21st century with its
accelerating information and breakneck growth will be no time for the timid.
|
The Gunnery is an integrated living and learning community characterized by
high expectations, trusting relationships and pervasive warmth. Many of the
most important lessons you will learn will be on athletic teams, in community
service and theatrical productions and in the dorms with friends. Our small
scale and our advisor/advisee system allows students and faculty to develop
close, enduring relationships. The Gunnery is also a diverse, global community
offering a framework for your understanding of an increasingly complex
world. Gunnery students come from 15 countries and 20 states; 38% of the
student body receives some financial assistance based on need.
At The Gunnery we will encourage you:
-
To live according to the values of the school’s mission
-
To challenge yourself with a broad array of courses and activities
-
To develop confidence by testing yourself academically, athletically and
artistically
-
To explore a range of team sports and demonstrate the value of sportsmanship
-
To experience the power of social responsibility through community service
-
To learn to manage time and balance intellectual, extracurricular and personal
interests
-
To think logically and write and speak clearly
-
To reach for leadership opportunities
