In Music Technology, students learn to create their own music
using computers and synthesizers. It is an interesting course for a student
wishing to learn how to use computers, for a student wishing to learn how to
write music, or for someone wanting to learn both. Students learn the basics of
music notation and how to play an electronic keyboard. Students also learn the
basics of chords and scales, and how to use these in writing music. This course
provides a background in a wide array of skills, in music and in computers.
Students also finish the course able to do something truly satisfying: to
create their own completed piece of music on the computer.
Audio recording class gives students an opportunity to learn
capture and to present the performances of other musicians. This is a course
that is interesting to musicians and to non musicians alike. Adding effects and
editing are two of the most enjoyable aspects of the course. The effects, such
as chorus, echo, and reverb, make a tremendous addition to the sound, and
choosing these carefully is an enjoyable and satisfying experience. Editing a
performance gives one the opportunity to find the most musical and accurate
portions of a recording, and to create 'the perfect take.' In sum, the
experience of taking the recordings of others and assembling them into a
presentable whole is deeply satisfying: it is interesting, entertaining, and it
requires the students to develop a degree of artistry in their approach to
music.
