1. Name your computer:
Students are required to name their computer properly. The Computer Name is
Year + Last name + first initial (ex: for Sue Harris the computer name
is 08HarrisS). This will also be the students' Username when they arrive
on campus. workgroup name should be set to STUDENT.
To set the computer name do the following:
right-click on my computer
select the computer name tab
click the change button (do not enter a name in the description field)
enter you computer name (08HarrisS) and workgroup (STUDENT) and click OK

2. Install anti-virus software:
The Gunnery required all students have resonably up-to-date anti-virus software.
Students are responsible for ensuring that their anti-virus software gets regular
updates.
We have observed that some anti-virus software (Symantec in particular) interferes with the student's ability
to use our network. The Gunnery will be providing, to matriculated students, Microsoft Forefront Antivirus software (free of charge). To install, unzip the file and run teh GunneryForefrontStudentSetup.bat file. Finally, upon connecting to the Gunnery network, students will be forced to install an software agent on their laptops that ensures their systems are up-to-date and compliant. Non-compliant systems will have restricted or no access to network resources.
3. Windows Updates:
You computer should be configured to get updates automatically. A Gunnery security agent, installed when students first connect, will help ensure that updates occure from Gunnery Update servers. Upon leaving The Gunnery, this agent should be uninstalled and updates will happen from Microsoft's website.
4. Configure your web browser:
The Gunnery uses a proxy server to help secure our network. To configure your
laptop to work please do the following:
- Open Internet Explorer
- Go to Tools | Internet Options | Connections (tab)
- Click the Lan Settings... button
- Make sure the top 2 check boxes are unchecked
- Check the 'Use Proxy Server...' check box

5. Update you wireless card driver:
In order to effectivly connect to our wireless system, all systems should have this
Microsoft Patch
installed. You can just click the link and let it install - your system must be running XP service pack 2
English version
Further, we have found that systems without up-to-date wireless card drivers often cannot
connect well to our secure wireless system. Contact the laptop manufacturer
to find out how to update the drivers.
You can determine the maker of you wireless card by going to Start | control panel
| network connections and clicking on the wireless card. Then click the properties
button. At the top it will list your network card (with a configure button).

7. Troubleshooting:
Below are a few of the more common issue we have seen and how to resolve them.
Be very careful if you decide to edit the registry.
If you need to re-enter your username
and password for Gunn-Secure (especially after a password change) do the following:
- start | run | type:
regedit
- navigate to the folder hkey-current-user/software/microsoft/eapol/userEapInfo
- delete the subfolders (they will have
strange names)
- the next time you try to connect to
Gunn-Secure you will be prompted to enter your credentials again.
If you want to reset your wireless
card: right click the wireless icon and click repair – this will reset everything.
