Technology integration through curriculum
As technology becomes ubiquitous in our society, The Gunnery has chosen to put together a strong technology program that will prepare students for college and beyond. The Gunnery has a state-of-the-art network and computer facilities, including 2 main labs and a well-equipped library.

At The Gunnery, technology is a tool to enhance learning – not a goal in and of itself. This philosophy is reflected in the fact that most computer intensive classes are not offered by the Computer Department but by the other academic departments.

IMPORTANT: Required Student Computer Configurations
All students who wish to use personal computers on campus must:

  • Look at the recommendations for laptops brought onto campus.
  • Configure their systems properly. The sidebar lists the steps needed to properly configure a computer for use on The Gunnery's network.
  • Services, Student systems and Support

The following is a summary list of guidelines to help describe the services offered by The Gunnery MIS department.

Support: We do not support student systems. We will, however, help get wireless cards to connect to our network – the student must bring the system to us.

Wireless/Dorm Access: There is wireless in all the dorms. We make our best effort to make it work in all rooms – but it is not guaranteed. Construction materials, location, and other factors may place a few rooms out of range. This is why we recommend a laptop – so students can move to the common room if their room is out of range. We probably reach 90-95% of the rooms.  Some cards are less powerful than others and therefore affect where a signal can be received. Students will need the latest wireless card drivers installed.

Computer Recommendation: We only recommend laptops (PC not Macs). We have nothing against desktops, and students don’t have to bring any system to campus, but we recommend laptops. Laptops are easier for us to support, and are more likely to get a wireless signal. Desktop wireless antennas are not as powerful and may not get a signal. All our testing (for which rooms get wireless) is based on a laptop.

Internet access: We only support Web browsing (http) and email. Other applications (IM, chat, etc) are not supported. Other applications, unless they violate the AUP or cause problems, are not prohibited, but are not supported and it is completely up to the student to make such applications function. Our firewall only permits traffic on port 80 (web). Hours for internet access are 6:00 am to 11:00 pm. i.e. during the academic day until lights out.

Because of the ever changing nature of Technology, new problems and issues may require us to change our stated policy. We reserve the right to do so at any time.
