Services Offered:
The Gunnery offers a number of services for students:
- Each student will be given a logon account to The Gunnery network.
- Each student will be given an email address. The address will be of the form
username@gunnery.org. For example 12SmithJ@gunnery.org where 12 is the class year,
Smith is the last name, and J is the first initial. Students will have access to
their email via a web client and are expected to check it daily. In addition, they
must conform to the quotas and keep their mailboxes cleaned up.
- Students will be given access during the school year to a secure section of the
file server for storage of school related work. These files are removed every summer
and should be backed up by the student.
- During the academic year, students are granted access to our remote access server.
- Students are given the settings and configurations for connecting to our secure
wireless network as well as settings for accessing the Internet via our firewall.
In general, students are given access to port 80 and web browsing is the only supported
applications. Other applications, assuming they do not cause any disruption and
are legal, are neither supported nor prohibited.
Student Owned Systems:
The Gunnery allows and encourages students to bring their own laptops on campus.
The technology section of our website details the requirements and recommendations
for students to connect personal system to The Gunnery network. This is where the
latest information can be found. In general:
- The Gunnery only tests our systems with Windows (Professional or Business) operating
systems in the English language. While we will gladly provide the necessary settings,
we do not have the expertise to help configure other types of systems for Gunnery
network access. Other Operating systems (like Macs) may not have full access to
network resources.
- The Gunnery does not provide general technical support for student owed systems
– we will assist in connecting a functioning laptop to The Gunnery wireless system
and the Internet. Students are encouraged to have their own support options (generally
through the manufacturer warranty).
- All student systems must comply with Gunnery standards, detailed on the website.
These will include, but are not limited to, anti-virus policies, naming policies,
use policies, as well as the installation of Gunnery software agents to ensure compliance.
Rules for network usage at The Gunnery:
All these rules apply to when students use their personal systems or Gunnery owned
systems.
- Students may authenticate to The Gunnery systems using only their own Gunnery
username and password. They should never allow anyone else to use their credentials,
and should never use someone else’s. All users must log off systems when they have
completed their session.
- Students may not use any system for illegal or immoral purposes including, but
not limited to, downloading of pirated software or content, violation of copyright,
or the use of adult sites.
- Students may not compromise the security, reliability, or smooth running of the
network. This includes possession of tools commonly used for hacking, network information
gathering, traffic analysis / viewing, or network compromise.
- Posting or sending of electronic content that in anyway undermines the reputation
of the school or any of its members is a disciplinary offense. This includes any
harassment or inappropriate language addressed to off campus persons. This includes
the use of non-Gunnery systems as well as activities done from off campus.
- The Gunnery reserves the right to determine the times and types of activities
that may occur on the network.
- Students are required to comply with polices set forth by The Gunnery, including
updates determined needed by the Director of Technology. Failure to comply may result
in loss of connectivity or disciplinary action.
Network Monitoring and Policy Violation:
- The Gunnery owns the network and reserves the rights to examine, inspect, and
log all files and activities that occur on the network and connected machines (including
student owned systems). This includes, but is not limited to, Internet browsing
patterns, e-mail, IM, posted content (social networking sites, discussion boards,
groups, etc.), and files.
- The Gunnery recognizes that technology and its uses change constantly. The Gunnery
reserves the right to change its policy without prior notice to ensure the smooth
and secure running of our network.
- Questionable uses of the network covered and not covered by this document may
be subject to discipline. If a student has any question as to the appropriateness
of a desired use of the computer, he or she should consult the Director of Technology.
- Any and all violations are treated seriously and can result in disciplinary action.
