The Writing Lab is an integral part of the English program. Each student in the 9th, 10th and 11th grades attends a weekly writing class taught by a member of the English Department. The intent of this course is to handle those issues of writing—grammar, voice, fluency—that the regular English class cannot address adequately.
Using a workshop model and such essential texts as Elements of Style and A Writer’s Reference, utilizing on-line resources, mixing worksheet exercises with actual writing assignments, each teacher offers an integrated series of classes.
In the fall term we have each student write a major personal statement. Based on that statement we offer in the winter term deliberate and intentional grammar work in the winter. In the spring term each student puts together a portfolio of writing.
