College counseling for students at The Gunnery begins in the fall of the junior
year and continues throughout the senior year. Parents of juniors are invited
to a program on college admissions and financial aid on the Friday afternoon of
Parents Weekend. During the winter term, the college
counselor begins meeting individually with juniors and then meets with all
juniors and their parents during the spring term. Based on these conversations,
each student receives a list of colleges to research and consider. Students are
advised to visit colleges during the summer and return to school with a good
idea of where they will apply.
Each senior meets with the college counselor in the first two weeks of school to
discuss and consider modifications to this list. Applications are completed and
sent out before Christmas. The College Counselor meets on a regular basis with
seniors and also with their parents throughout the school year. Colleges notify
students of their acceptance in late March and early April, and students must
decide by May 1 where they will enroll. The vast majority of students at The
Gunnery enroll in one of their two top choice colleges.
