| CSS/PROFILE |
Financial aid form used by the College Scholarship Service
to determine financial need. This service carries a modest fee.
Must be filed in addition to FAFSA.

| Common Application |
A standard application form accepted by more than 320 colleges. Form is
available at www.commonapp.org and may be
submitted on-line.

| Division I, II, III |
Designations for college athletic programs. Division I
and II must be certified by the NCAA Clearing House. Forms are available at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net.
Division III does not offer athletic scholarships per se.

| Early Action (EA) |
A non-binding plan for early
notification. Students may still apply to other schools. Students may be deferred and
reconsidered in the regular decision cycle

| Early Decision (ED) |
A binding plan for early
notification. If accepted, the student agrees to attend and to withdraw
all other applications. |
| FAFSA |
Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
Used by colleges to determine eligibility for federal financial aid
funds. |
| Financial Aid |
Need-based aid offered by the federal government and by
colleges. Awards generally include grants (which do not
need to be repaid), loans (which must be repaid), and work-
study (funds earned through on-campus jobs during the
school year). Need is determined through use of the
FAFSA, the CSS/PROFILE, and the college’s own financial
aid forms (if they use one).

| NCAA |
National Collegiate Athletic Association. Governing body for
most college athletics. NCAA certifies athletes who hope to
compete at Division I and II levels. Register at
www.ncaaclearinghouse.net.

| PSAT |
Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test.
Taken by sophomores
and juniors at The Gunnery. The PSAT is the qualifying exam
for all National Merit Scholarship programs.

| Regular Decision |
The most common admissions plan. Deadlines are in January or February for many private colleges and earlier
for state universities.
|
| Rolling Admission |
Decisions at some colleges are made when applications
are received. Early application to rolling admissions schools is highly
recommended. |
| SAT's |
Standardized test required by most colleges. Scores range from 200-800 in Critical Reading, Math and Writing sections.

| TOEFL |
Test of English as a Foreign Language.
Taken by students whose native language is not English. TOEFL is taken
off campus at a designated test center. iBT of 80 = CBT of 550 and
iBT of 100 = CBT of 600.

| Wait List |
A list of applicants considered qualified for admission but
placed “on hold”. Wait list candidates must decide whether they
want to remain on a wait list or accept an offer of admission from
another college. A student remaining on a wait list may not be
notified before May 1st and must make a deposit at another school.
