The Gunnery’s interpretation of the personal advisor system constitutes the essence of the advantage of a smaller school. This significant relationship among the student-parents-faculty mentor constitutes, in some cases, the most important factor in a young person’s growth. It is what we aspire to do best here.
At The Gunnery, every student is matched with a faculty advisor. The advisor meets twice weekly with his/her advisees at advisor lunches and otherwise maintains frequent contact both formally and informally. With the exception of new students who are assigned advisors, returning students may select advisors. In order to change advisors there is a formal petitioning process. A form is available through the Dean of Students office for initiating the process.
The advisor guides a student toward understanding his/her academic responsibilities, formulating realistic goals, making course selections to build a challenging transcript, and often assists in managing personal and behavioral issues. Personal conferences among parents, advisor, and teachers are an important function of the fall Parents’ Weekend and these conferences establish relationships that will be sustained throughout a student’s tenure.
Since advisors are usually responsible for anywhere from four to eight students, it is recommended that a parent with special immediate concerns initiate the necessary contact with the advisor and so help to insure timely and accurate communication. (E-mail address: faculty last name followed by first initial @ gunnery.org). It is further recommended that parents supply the school and advisor with an e-mail address as a secondary means of contact.
| Class Deans and Class Advisors |
Each of the four classes has a Dean/Class advisor who is responsible for the general well-being and academic progress of the entire class. Their purpose/role is to help plan class activities/trips, monitor the academic growth of students, assist students in the rigors of boarding school life, and facilitate opportunities for each student to successfully understand and live the school mission.
The following are the Class Deans/Class Advisors for the year:
Freshmen: Craig Badger
Sophomores: Jennifer Badger
Juniors: Sean Walsh
Seniors: Emily FitzHugh
These faculty members are an additional resource for advisors, teachers, and parents. The advisor meets with the class each term.
