| Day Student Guidelines and Expectations |
The goal of regulations governing day students is to encourage them to share as much as possible the boarding experience while recognizing their status as students who live at home. The behavior of day students must be that required of all Gunnery students, and day students are expected to conform, as far as is practicable, to the same regulations as boarding students. When off campus, day students are under the supervision of their parents but actions detrimental to the school community may be subject to Day Student Committee review under The Gunnery citizenship clause.
When off campus, day students are under the supervision of their parents. Parents of day students are urged to encourage their children to follow a program of check-in and study hours that conforms to that of boarders.
The following are expectations for day students:
- Day students must sign in with the MOD at breakfast or with the DOS office before their first academic class.
- If a day student is late three or more times in a term they will need to serve the following Saturday detention every time they are late arriving to school. This is not missing check in, but missing classes, no matter the excuse.
- Please remember that day student parents must call the Dean’s Office if they are going to be arriving late to school or the Health center if they are sick or have scheduled doctor’s appointments.
- The Gunnery believes that day students will participate more in the school if they are more involved in the dormitory. Day students are therefore expected to observe the same dormitory rules as boarders and are expected to maintain a respectable room space.
- Day students are encouraged to spend time at the school during evenings until check-in and on weekends, but if they are to spend overnights at the school, they must get permission from the Dean of Students or Dean of Residential Life in advance. Day students who stay more than two nights per term (unless the stay is weather related) will be billed a “boarders” fee of $20 per night. Boarding fees for exceptional circumstances requiring successive overnights will be assessed by the business office.
- In addition, parents must confirm any overnight through the Dean of Student’s office at 868-7334, X280 or e-mail dos@gunnery.org. In emergencies and weather-related situations, any day student may stay overnight, but the Dean of Students or Dean of Residential Life must be informed as well as the Dorm Parent. Normally all day students are to leave campus by late check-in (Sunday – Friday 10:00 p.m., Saturday at 11:30 p.m.). If a day student wishes to stay later, the student must have express permission from the Dean of Student’s Office.
- Day students who stay until late check-in are also expected to check-in at meals if a formal meal is being served, and are expected at evening study hall as per their Academic Merit status.
- Day students must park their cars only in the assigned spaces in the parking lot located next to Van Sinderen Dorm, or in the dining hall parking lot. Day students may not drive cars through any other part of the campus. It is expected that once a day student arrives to school, the car will remain parked until the student leaves campus for the day. Trips in automobiles back and forth during the day to home, downtown, etc. are permitted only with express Dean of Students permission and as per a student’s permission form.
Boarders may not ride with day student drivers unless the boarding parents have indicated appropriate riding permission as per our permission form. In addition, day students may not drive boarders unless day parents have given prior consent as per the permission form. Violation of these rules may result in the loss of the driving privilege to school and/or school discipline.
