As is outlined in our mission statement, The Gunnery rests on the four cornerstones of character: scholarship, integrity, respect and responsibility. We believe that providing students with the opportunity to be leaders in their own school community is an integral part of teaching and reinforcing these qualities. There are several opportunites for students to gain leadership experience, as described below:
This is the most demanding student leadership position in the school, and as such, these students are held in high esteem by students and faculty alike.
Six seniors are elected in the spring of the junior year by the entire school (students and faculty). Led by the Head Prefect, these seniors serve as the top student representatives of student government. They run Community Council, may sit in on Student Activities Committee meetings, are present at designated faculty meetings, chair adhoc committees, supervise school meetings, and participate in Disciplinary Committee hearings; in short, they are the students’ voice in virtually all areas of school life. Prefects work with the Dean of Students and act as a channel through which faculty and student concerns may be communicated.

Each dorm will be assigned a Head Residential advisor as well one or more Residential advisors. Residential Advisors are student adjutants to the faculty in the dorm, they are appointed by the Dean of Residential Life and Dorm Heads in consultation with the Dean of Students. Residential Advisors act as role models and help manage the everyday systems of a dormitory: dorm jobs, room inspections, special dorm functions, and check-ins. They also offer peer support and peer counseling to students in a confidential setting. It is a position of responsibility that requires strength of personality, maturity, and sensitivity.
| Red and Gray Tour Guide Leaders |
Head Tour Guides are appointed by the admissions office and work closely with the Director of the Tour Guide Program. Head Tour Guides are ambassadors for The Gunnery community and are responsible for aiding with the day to day running of tours in the admissions office. Their duties include the training and development of new tour guides, reminding students of their upcoming tours, attending school fairs, receptions, and open houses, as well as coming up with ways to further develop and enhance the Red and Gray Tour Guide Program.
The President of the Gunn Society is appointed by the Advancement Office and works closely with the Director of the Gunn Society program. The purpose of the Gunn Society is to create a bridge between current students and the external Gunnery community and the Gunnery alumni in particular. Activities include, but are not limited to assisting the Advancement Office in outreach to community, thanking donors for gifts, organizing and raising funds for the Senior Gift, participating on student panels and generally being ambassadors representing the student body to the external community of Gunnery alumni, friends, board members and present and past parents.
| Campus Job Program and Dining Hall Managers |
Students and faculty members in the school participate in the campus job program whose purpose is to teach the value of community service and the dignity of manual labor. Over the course of the year a student will perform approximately one to four weeks of a daily task generally for one-half hour per day and, on some special designated days, will work together within the dormitory unit for one hour on an organized campus enhancement or dorm clean-up project. Dining Hall managers supervise the performance and range of campus jobs in the Dining Hall.
Community Council is a forum in which students have an opportunity to make suggestions, address grievances, ask questions, and offer constructive ideas to enhance the school. Community Council is open to any member of The Gunnery Community. The agenda is set by the Prefects; Prefects lead the discussion. All dorm must have the Head Residential Advisor and RA’s not on duty in attendance. The Council makes recommendations via the Dean of Students to the faculty and the Head of School. Head RA’s should report to the dorm in a formal dorm meeting to discuss the meeting proceedings. It should be noted that all of the recommendations of the Community Council are ultimately subject to the approval of the Head of School.
