Thanksgiving, winter, and spring vacations begin after a student’s last commitment provided the dormitory room is in acceptable condition. Please refer to our official school calendar and open/closed weekend listing when making vacation plans. Please note that we require our students to return from our vacations by 7:15 p.m. on the scheduled return date, unless otherwise stated.
Head’s Weekends are mandatory in the respect that we lock up our campus and shut down our dining facilities, making it impossible for any students to spend that time at the school. Our staff and our teachers use that time off for themselves and/or for projects and meetings.
Transportation may be facilitated through the school to and from Bradley International Airport in Hartford, JFK or LaGuardia in New York, and is provided by the school – at designated times only – to and from the Southbury Bus (Bonanza) Station (203-264-2840), in Southbury, for these vacations. Students are held financially responsible for transportation they request personally, whether they use it or not, unless the school is informed of cancellations far enough in advance.
Students are expected to look and behave in a respectable manner while on public transportation traveling to, or from, The Gunnery. This means that alcohol or drug use is subject to school discipline and Gunnery school rules will apply during transit. Students who return to campus in a state of intoxication will be subject to discipline.
| Permission and Weekend Procedures |
It is assumed when a student takes a weekend or afternoon trip that the student is going to a place approved on the completed permission form sent to the Dean of Student’s office by his/her parents prior to the beginning of the year, or has obtained a necessary specific destination permission for that weekend. Students also must have an invitation from the host for the weekend whenever they leave school to visit any place other than their own homes. Students must indicate the host name, address, and conform to their permissions status as completed on the form by parents or guardians. If the checkout procedure has been completed by a student, yet either an invitation or permission is questionable, the school reserves the right to telephone the host parents or deny the permission. Misrepresentation is subject to discipline.
If a student is detained in returning from a weekend for some reason, he/she must call the School Answering Service (860-868-7334), the Dean of Students (860-868-7620), or email at dos@gunnery.org. DO NOT CALL THE DORM, DORM PARENTS OR OTHER STUDENTS.
Calling to inform of a late return in most cases is a courtesy and may not excuse a student from receiving points/demerits. A student who returns late so that he/she misses study hall or possibly even class time may be requested to remain on campus the following weekend and/or may forfeit an open weekend.
Permissions and weekend sign-outs are based on the principle of the Honor System that “a student’s word is his or her bond.” False statements or intentional violations of permission regulations are considered severe violations of our honor-based system and violators are subject to discipline. Violators placed on discipline will incur restrictions, and this will result in the further loss of some or all of a student’s weekend and permission privileges.
The Gunnery has designated certain weekends as “closed” in recognition of the value of these to a boarding school environment. During closed weekends, all boarding students remain at school to participate in planned weekend activities or study for exams.
All weekends that are not designated as “closed” are available for students to leave campus provided they honor all commitments – including assigned detentions, if applicable.
Students may leave after their final academic, extracurricular, disciplinary and athletic commitments on Saturday (unless they have a Sunday detention) and must return by 7:15 p.m. on Sunday. Special permission must be granted IN ADVANCE by the Dean of Students for anyone planning a later return on Sunday. All permissions to be away from the school for medical appointments must be cleared first through the Health Center. Such urgent appointments that must occur during school time should be limited to the middle of the week and in the afternoon preferably. The school does not sanction the combining of medical and then ensuing social permissions.
Students taking weekends are required to use our computerized check out system. The check out should be completed by Thursday 7:00 p.m. in time for the Dean’s office to make any necessary arrangements, permission checks, or weekend off campus lists. The approved checkout list will be available on Friday by lunch. Students must check the list to insure that weekend permission has been granted. Late sign outs will be determined on a per case basis. Failure to follow check-out procedures will result in 3/4 points/demerits being given.
For vacations, all boarding and day students must check out on the web indicating that they have obtained college clearance (seniors), library clearance, advisor clearance, and room clearance as designated.

A student wishing to check off campus during the afternoon on weekdays must observe the following guidelines:
- Complete the entire checkout form on the web and secure verbal permission from a faculty member. Students are accountable for honest representation of their permission status.
- Submit complete information into the network. Failure to submit complete information will result in two (2) points/demerits being given.
- Check-in via computer upon return at the latest by the next meal or school commitment. Students are expected to return by the time indicated and certainly in time for study hall or a school commitment. Failure to check in properly will result in two (2) points/demerits being given.
