The English Journal was the first student publication to be made available on The Gunnery website. Since Fall 2003, issues of the English Journal have come out twice a year. The issues contain a representative selection from the online Journal (intranet only), as well as selected artwork. The Journal shares its best work (in the estimation of its editors) with the school’s traditional literary journal, the Stray Shot, a professionally printed journal that is issued at the end of the school year.

The first issue of the Stray Shot was published in March 1884. It was named for a regular column delineating the arbitrary, funny, off-the-mark events and utterances of school and classroom life (like the Civil War cannon shots which went astray). In the beginning it was a school newspaper, a literary journal, a town newspaper, an alumni magazine and a yearbook and was published ten months a year. Gradually it dropped many of these functions (The Red and Gray yearbook was inaugurated in 1912, The Gunnery News was established in 1935, and the alumni magazine was begun in 1949). It continued to be published four times a year as a literary magazine until 1955. It became the once a year magazine it is currently in 1956.
