International Students at The Gunnery
The Gunnery has 300 students; 46 of those students, representing 15 countries (see list at right), are international students.

Due to the fact that The Gunnery is a small school, we may have to limit the number of students from any one country to ensure that all international students have a true North American boarding school experience.

More Information
ESL AT THE GUNNERY: If a student requires ESL, he or she must still take a full courseload of mainstream classes in history, science and mathematics, in addition to ESL. The ESL class focuses on conversation, academic writing, note-taking from lectures and fine-tuning points of grammar.

LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY LEVELS OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: International student applicants must provide The Gunnery with their score on either the SLEP (50 or higher) or the TOEFL (500 or higher) test, as an indication of English language ability. Students scoring at these levels typically are capable of handling our rigorous academic program. The Gunnery’s ESL program is limited, and students must have a reasonable command of English before enrolling.

ADMISSIONS TESTING: All US candidates are required to submit SSAT scores to the Admissions Office as part of their application.  While the SSAT is not required for international students, we welcome those scores from international students who have taken the SSAT.

SOCIAL LIFE AT THE GUNNERY: The international students at The Gunnery are very active in all aspects of school life. All members of our community participate in sports, social activities, and other extracurriculars.  Leadership positions in every area of school life are open to all.

ATHLETICS: All students are required to play sports during every academic term.  Athletic practices are held daily for 1½ hours, and contests with fellow preparatory schools are played twice weekly.
