Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Post Graduate(PG)?

A Post-Graduate is someone who has graduated from high school but needs or would like one more year at the college preparatory level to mature – as a student, an athlete, and/or a person – and to make him or herself a more attractive candidate in the college admissions process.

A PG does not lose any college eligibility when it comes to athletics.

Why does someone come to The Gunnery for a PG year? In other words, what can be gained from a post-graduate year?

  • To mature academically – to develop the kind of academic skills and disciplined study habits that will allow a student to succeed in college.
  • To grow and mature socially and physically, especially for those who graduate from high school at a young age.
  • To live in a boarding school environment similar to a college experience.
  • To improve a student’s academic resume – level of course study, grades, and SAT/ACT scores. (Grades earned during the post-graduate year cannot, however, improve one’s high school GPA when it comes to the NCAA Clearing House.)
  • To improve a student’s athletic skills and abilities; to make the student a more attractive candidate as a student-athlete in the college process.
What academic courses does a Post-Graduate enroll in?

We anticipate Post-Graduates will progress in every discipline from their former high school. The Gunnery utilizes every resource available in creating each student’s academic schedule. The school first examines each PG’s high school transcript to discover which Gunnery graduation requirements already have been met. We then ask the student to take a placement test in math and foreign language (if they have not completed through a third year in a specific language) prior to assigning classes. Post Graduates often find themselves able to select specific courses based on particular interests, with numerous elective and AP courses available to them. A PG typically will take five academic courses.

Are there any guarantees inherent in a PG year?

There is no guarantee that a student’s SAT scores will improve or that he or she will be admitted to the college of his or her choice.

However, as in any other endeavor a student undertakes, the more energy and effort he or she invests, the greater the rewards. A student who works diligently and who embraces the post-graduate experience for all that it offers will undoubtedly be better prepared for the rigors – academic, social, and athletic – of college life.

Is there financial aid available for a PG?

Yes. If need is shown, financial aid is available but cannot be guaranteed.
