The Commons encompasses the values we as faculty hold in common across the curriculum and the skills and scholarly habits necessary for student success at The Gunnery and beyond.
The academic, residential, and co-curricular experiences at The Gunnery enable all students to gain self-awareness, an analytical mindset, as well as creative, social, and moral intelligence.  The following core values are interdisciplinary and serve as the foundation for all courses offered at The Gunnery.  The Commons encompasses the values we as faculty hold in common across the curriculum and the skills and scholarly habits necessary for student success at The Gunnery and beyond.  A Gunnery education allows for individuals who are aware of their responsibility to continue to learn throughout their lives, to speak their minds with conviction, and to actively and ethically engage their community at all times.

    The willingness to understand one’s own learning style and the learning process in general, to seek the ability to teach oneself, and to develop those habits essential to a life of learning.  
  • Respect and Collaboration

    The ability and willingness to challenge one’s own perspective, to see, acknowledge, and appreciate the ideas of others, and to incorporate differing perspectives into one’s own growing perspective.
  • Effective Communication

    The ability to formulate one’s own ideas, having listened to and considered a variety of perspectives, and to express them clearly, effectively, and confidently.

    The ability to understand and analyze historical, cultural, aesthetic, ethical, spiritual, political and intellectual context, as well as the context of a specific academic discipline, that frames a course of study.

Founded in 1850 by abolitionist, educator, and outdoorsman Frederick Gunn, The Gunnery is a coeducational college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12/post-graduate. Dedicated teacher-mentor-coaches challenge students to reach their full potential in a home-like setting where character and citizenship are valued as much as intellect and achievement.
