You almost have to see our beautiful 220-acre campus
in Washington, Connecticut to understand how our tight-knit community of nearly 300 students and 55 teachers offers something that is only possible here. At our intentionally small school, new students quickly come to know and be known by every student and faculty member. They soon realize the tremendous opportunities for growth, self-realization, friendship, and expression that come with a Gunnery education.
What truly sets us apart is the legacy of our school’s founder, Frederick Gunn
. His vision still guides many of our academic
, outdoor, athletic
and residential programs. Mr. Gunn believed that all students benefit from teachers and adult mentors who work with them to promote growth, both intellectually and in character—in the wisdom to know the right thing to do and the courage to do it.
Mr. Gunn also knew that students learn many of life’s most valuable lessons outside of the classroom, especially when surrounded and inspired by a natural environment. The goal of our integrated outdoor program is to have every student participate “in nature” in some substantial way. In our technology-heavy world, we see this as imperative to student development and achievement. The Gunn legacy and our mission ring true especially today, even though they were formed more than 150 years ago.
In conjunction with our outdoor program, our LEADS program
earning for E
thical Engagement, A
ctive Citizenship and D
ervice) provides a four-year curriculum based on the mission
of our school. This focused approach helps students develop the lifelong learning and leadership skills needed to be active and responsible citizens, both locally and globally.
These are just some of the things that make The Gunnery community truly unique. I look forward to having you learn more about us and meet your potential teachers, mentors and peers.
