10th Annual Play4TheCure Raises Over $8,000 for Cancer Research

The highlight of this annual event is a co-ed, intramural field hockey game in which two teams – Team White and Team Gray – play for two, 20-minute halves, with a 10-minute half-time. Each member of The Gunnery's Varsity Field Hockey Team may sponsor up to five boys as fundraising partners. The 18 boys who raise the most money for NFCR are eligible to play for Team White or Team Gray. Those who raise funds but are not selected to play on a team are assigned to lead one of the cheer squads at the game. Students, faculty, family members and other spectators are invited to dress in their team's colors on game day.

This year's game was supported by multiple fundraising activities, including a t-shirt sale, a game-day bake sale, a Beads Beat Cancer sale and player sponsorships. The team also established a Crowdrise page to accept direct donations.

In previous years, The Gunnery's Play4TheCure game has raised from $1,600 to $4,000 in support of NFCR. This year, the team raised nearly twice as much as its goal of $4,200. “We would like to thank everyone for their overwhelming support. This game aims to raise awareness about various cancers, and cancer prevention, and to also raise funds for cancer research,” the team said. “While the girls typically wear pink, it is important to note that this is a fundraiser for ALL cancers, not just breast cancer.”
