Gunnery Tenor Chosen to Perform with All-State Chorus

Drew Sutherland ’21 was selected to perform as a tenor in the All-State Chorus at the Connecticut Music Educators Association’s 2019 All-State Festival in Hartford. Auditions were held February 2 at North Haven High School.
On January 19, three Gunnery students, Sutherland and altos Aris Wang ’20 and Yolanda Wang ’21, were chosen to perform with the Northern Region Chorus in the CMEA Northern Region Music Festival at New Britain High School. The two and a half hour concert featured performances by the northern region’s top students in jazz, orchestra, band and chorus. The choral program included “Alleluia,” by Bastian Baker, “Der Abend,” by Johannes Brahms, “Five Hebrew Love Songs” by Eric Whitacre and “My Song” by Ériks Ešenvalds.

“This is a great experience for the students. They have a lot of fun,” said Jesse Perkins of the Performing Arts faculty, who accompanied the students to the regional festival, and to auditions for the All-State Festival, which features the finest high school musicians in the state. Sutherland will perform in concert with the All-State Chorus on April 13 at 1 p.m. at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford. The Gunnery has been represented at the CMEA regional and all-state levels in previous years. Aris Wang was selected to perform in the 2018 All-State Chorus.

Founded in 1850 by abolitionist, educator, and outdoorsman Frederick Gunn, The Gunnery is a coeducational college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12/post-graduate. Dedicated teacher-mentor-coaches challenge students to reach their full potential in a home-like setting where character and citizenship are valued as much as intellect and achievement. Individualized attention and high expectations help young learners develop not only the skills and confidence they will need in college, but also the moral compass and love of learning that will serve them well in life. The school attracts ambitious, academically curious students who will both shine as unique individuals and thrive as contributing members of a deeply connected community. By the time they graduate, Gunnery students have become well rounded, grounded young adults with a sharpened sense of who they are and who they want to become.
