Students Honored for Achieving Top Scores in National Physics Bowl

Students who excelled in the sciences were among those recognized at a formal dinner May 21. Ally Madow ’19 was recognized by Science Department Chair Morgen Fisher ’03 for setting a school record by completing seven science courses during her four years at the school. Fisher also recognized John Crabtree ’19 for achieving the highest score on the AP Chemistry exam. He was one of 14 Gunnery students who traveled to the University of Connecticut at Storrs to take the exam this spring.
A total of 45 Gunnery students competed in the 2019 National PhysicsBowl. Sponsored annually by the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT), the PhysicsBowl exam is offered to first and second-year physics students across the United States, Canada, China, and several other Southeast Asian countries. Students are challenged to complete 40 questions in 45 minutes on a multiple-choice exam and their schools are ranked regionally based on the results.

“There are two tests, Advanced Physics and Physics, and the top five cumulative scores in each division represent the ‘school’ score for that division,” Steven Bailey of the science faculty explained. “Schools compete in ‘regions’ and the New England Region is one of the most competitive.”

Congratulations to the following Gunnery students for achieving the highest scores in the school for the 2019 National Physics Bowl:

Division 2 (Advanced Physics)
First Place (tie): John Feng ’20 and Austin Ngo ’20
Second Place (tie): Tim Tscheppe ’19, Tucker Paron ’19, and Alice Pan ’21

Division 1 (Physics)
First Place: Maggie Xiang ’21
Second Place (tie): Grace McEneaney ’20 and Bonnie Bao ’20
Third Place (tie): Lucas Rosati ’20, Gianna Russillo ’20, Frederik Von Klitzing ’20, Daniel Flink ’21 and Jihoon An ’20

Founded in 1850 by abolitionist, educator, and outdoorsman Frederick Gunn, The Gunnery is a coeducational college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12/post-graduate. Dedicated teacher-mentor-coaches challenge students to reach their full potential in a home-like setting where character and citizenship are valued as much as intellect and achievement. Individualized attention and high expectations help young learners develop not only the skills and confidence they will need in college, but also the moral compass and love of learning that will serve them well in life. The school attracts ambitious, academically curious students who will both shine as unique individuals and thrive as contributing members of a deeply connected community. By the time they graduate, Gunnery students have become well rounded, grounded young adults with a sharpened sense of who they are and who they want to become.
