Center for Academic Support

The Gunnery recognizes that many talented students face challenges in learning. Our Center for Academic Support offers a supplemental program to help students meet and even exceed academic expectations.

The Center is on the first floor of Brinsmade, where it is visible and accessible to The Gunnery community. The space is a private work area that is distraction-free, soundproof, temperature-controlled, and full of natural light.

The Center is staffed by Learning Specialists, the majority of whom have taught in classroom settings. They know how to help teachers communicate successfully with different kinds of learners, and they have strategies to help students gain the most from their time in the classroom.

The Center's mission is to help students become efficient, effective, independent learners and to help teachers reach the widest range of learning styles. Our emphasis is on intentional learning. Students learn study skills, strategies, and techniques that enable them to figure out what works best for them. With such metacognitive understanding in place, they become articulate self-advocates and stronger scholars.

The connection between the student and The Center for Academic Support often begins with the admissions process, when The Gunnery evaluates each student's academic needs and determines what support may be necessary to help him or her through our rigorous college preparatory curriculum. Once the student is enrolled, The Center collaborates with the student's teachers and advisor to make certain that we are all working together to ensure the best academic experience possible for each student.

Founded in 1850 by abolitionist, educator, and outdoorsman Frederick Gunn, The Gunnery is a coeducational college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12/post-graduate. Dedicated teacher-mentor-coaches challenge students to reach their full potential in a home-like setting where character and citizenship are valued as much as intellect and achievement. Individualized attention and high expectations help young learners develop not only the skills and confidence they will need in college, but also the moral compass and love of learning that will serve them well in life. The school attracts ambitious, academically curious students who will both shine as unique individuals and thrive as contributing members of a deeply connected community. By the time they graduate, Gunnery students have become well rounded, grounded young adults with a sharpened sense of who they are and who they want to become.
