Academics
You’ll hear Gunnery students and teachers say “don’t forget about P.O.” What are they talking about?

Academic Honor Code and The Pledge

The Gunnery operates under a strict interpretation of an honor code especially applicable to academics. At the beginning of the academic year, every new student is required to write out and then sign the following pledge: “I have neither given nor received improper aid in the preparation of this assignment. Unless properly attributed to others, it represents exclusively my own work.”

Plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty, such as cheating, are considered major school violations. Students must initial each assessment and submitted assignment indicating that the work is one’s own and must attribute sources as appropriate. This reaffirmation of your adherence to the academic honor code is referred to at The Gunnery as ‘pledging’ your work. Whether or not you remember to pledge an assignment or an assessment, you are still beholden to its obligations and responsibilities.
P.O. stands for Pledge Observed and in the simplest terms means you are upholding The Gunnery honor code.

Founded in 1850 by abolitionist, educator, and outdoorsman Frederick Gunn, The Gunnery is a coeducational college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12/post-graduate. Dedicated teacher-mentor-coaches challenge students to reach their full potential in a home-like setting where character and citizenship are valued as much as intellect and achievement. Individualized attention and high expectations help young learners develop not only the skills and confidence they will need in college, but also the moral compass and love of learning that will serve them well in life. The school attracts ambitious, academically curious students who will both shine as unique individuals and thrive as contributing members of a deeply connected community. By the time they graduate, Gunnery students have become well rounded, grounded young adults with a sharpened sense of who they are and who they want to become.
