Campus Life
Athletics are a tradition that stretches back, unbroken, to Mr. Gunn's era. A staunch advocate of physical fitness, he created the school's first athletic teams.  With a wide range of options – 35 Gunnery teams compete in 15 sports – you have the opportunity to try new sports and to perfect your skills.

Athletics at The Gunnery

The Gunnery's sports program cultivates competition and cooperation in the context of organized athletics. By competing on a team, you will make friends with people outside your classes or dormitory, and you will learn what it means to define goals for yourself and for the group. Your coaches will be members of the Gunnery faculty who are as passionate about coaching as they are about teaching.

Our facilities accommodate a variety of sports and athletes at all levels.

The Gunnery is proud to offer live streaming of select home games.  To view the schedule go to The Gunnery's Boxcast channel. Make sure to follow Gunnery athletics on Twitter @GunnAthletics

In fall of 2016, The Gunnery, Millbrook School, Pomfret School and Forman School started their eight-player football initiative among New England preparatory schools. The goal of the initiative is to provide a viable, long-term alternative to the game in its traditional form.

Founded in 1850 by abolitionist, educator, and outdoorsman Frederick Gunn, The Gunnery is a coeducational college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12/post-graduate. Dedicated teacher-mentor-coaches challenge students to reach their full potential in a home-like setting where character and citizenship are valued as much as intellect and achievement. Individualized attention and high expectations help young learners develop not only the skills and confidence they will need in college, but also the moral compass and love of learning that will serve them well in life. The school attracts ambitious, academically curious students who will both shine as unique individuals and thrive as contributing members of a deeply connected community. By the time they graduate, Gunnery students have become well rounded, grounded young adults with a sharpened sense of who they are and who they want to become.
