Campus Life
Athletics are a tradition that stretches back, unbroken, to Mr. Gunn's era. A staunch advocate of physical fitness, he created the school's first athletic teams.  With a wide range of options – 35 Gunnery teams compete in 15 sports – you have the opportunity to try new sports and to perfect your skills.

Athletics Mission Statement

Frederick Gunn believed in the value of pursuing education outside of the classroom and felt strongly that character was developed and honed in what we today call co-curricular activities.

The guiding principle behind athletics at The Gunnery is our belief in its educational value for our students. Our primary commitment is to provide an opportunity for student-athletes to fully develop their academic and athletic potential while simultaneously preparing them with life-long lessons for success. These opportunities include the drive to take one’s talents to the highest level of performance; embracing the discipline needed to reach high standards; learning to work with others as a team in pursuit of a common goal; and adherence to codes of fairness and respect.

The Gunnery is committed to excellence in athletics as part of a larger commitment to excellence in education. Athletes are also expected to adhere to a level of conduct that brings credit to themselves and the school and uphold the values stated in our school’s mission; character, citizenship, and service. Through practice, training and competition, the department strives to instill the character traits of engagement, collaboration, fitness, and competition in each student-athlete:

Engagement is defined as regular co-curricular interactions with Gunnery peers and faculty that build community and lifelong relationships.
Collaboration is defined as the experience of working together with Gunnery peers and faculty towards a common goal and learning selflessness by being a part of something bigger than oneself.
Fitness is defined as engaging in regular cardiovascular exercise, learning how to be/stay fit, learning the value of physical fitness, and learning the lifelong ideals of healthy living.
Competition is defined as striving, individually or collectively, against others toward a goal and risking the adversity and potential failure that accompanies that endeavor.

Founded in 1850 by abolitionist, educator, and outdoorsman Frederick Gunn, The Gunnery is a coeducational college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12/post-graduate. Dedicated teacher-mentor-coaches challenge students to reach their full potential in a home-like setting where character and citizenship are valued as much as intellect and achievement. Individualized attention and high expectations help young learners develop not only the skills and confidence they will need in college, but also the moral compass and love of learning that will serve them well in life. The school attracts ambitious, academically curious students who will both shine as unique individuals and thrive as contributing members of a deeply connected community. By the time they graduate, Gunnery students have become well rounded, grounded young adults with a sharpened sense of who they are and who they want to become.
