Campus Life
The Gunnery is a small, close-knit community. The friends you make here  - sharing a room, hanging out in the common room, talking with your dorm parent, eating pizza or helping a classmate out with math - are often your friends for life - ask our alumni, they will tell you!

At The Gunnery

  • We have 10 single-sex dorms. The largest has 50 students, the smallest 10.
  • Most of our students live in singles or doubles; we have a few rooms for 3-4 students.
  • All of our dorms have a shared common room with comfy couches and a TV and microwave.
  • All day students have a room on campus, most with boarding roommates - there is always a place to study, change for your afternoon activity, and stay over if you need to.
  • There are at least 2 faculty apartments attached to each dorm. Your dorm parents are a big part of dorm life  - they help with homework, make you treats as a surprise, let you walk their dog, hang out and watch a game with their kids or use their kitchen to make a snack. They are full of advice and support and work hard to make sure that all the residents of their dorm have a safe, quiet place to study and a great home away from home.
  • Student RAs (residential assistants) help to run each dorm. As returning students, they know the school community well and help to make new students feel at home. They also organize the dorm community service activity and take the lead when your dorm competes in the Dorm Cup.
  • Yes, there are rules: we have study hall 6 nights a week from 8:00 to 10:00 and check-in after that. There are weekly room inspections and everyone has a dorm job at some point in the year. While some of the rules may seem strict at first, our students will tell you that they really help you to figure out a routine that lets you balance school, friends and fun. You become independent. Best of all you are well-prepared to head off to college and take care of yourself.

Founded in 1850 by abolitionist, educator, and outdoorsman Frederick Gunn, The Gunnery is a coeducational college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12/post-graduate. Dedicated teacher-mentor-coaches challenge students to reach their full potential in a home-like setting where character and citizenship are valued as much as intellect and achievement. Individualized attention and high expectations help young learners develop not only the skills and confidence they will need in college, but also the moral compass and love of learning that will serve them well in life. The school attracts ambitious, academically curious students who will both shine as unique individuals and thrive as contributing members of a deeply connected community. By the time they graduate, Gunnery students have become well rounded, grounded young adults with a sharpened sense of who they are and who they want to become.
