Campus Life

8th Annual Play4TheCure Fundraiser Begins

This year, we hope to surpass the numbers from 2015 and 2016. We have various fundraising efforts around campus, as well as help from our partners at Westover. Any donations you are willing and able to give will be greatly appreciated. Many of the girls on our team have been affected by this disease in some way shape or form, and our program would like to do whatever we can to help find the cure.

Dear Field Hockey Friends and Families,

Thank you all for your support of the program. The girls are always a little more excited and eager to do well when you are all on the sidelines, or liking posts on Instagram. If you are not already following us on Instagram, here is the handle for our page: @Gunnfhockey

On to our annual Play4TheCure FundraiserEvery year for the past eight years, the Gunnery field hockey team has played in a Play4TheCure game against Westover School. This game is partnered with a fundraising effort to raise awareness about cancer, and to also raise funds for cancer research. While the girls typically wear pink, it is important to note that this is a fundraiser for ALL cancers, not just breast cancer.

In 2015 we held a head shaving contest and sent out a Crowdrise link (https://www.crowdrise.com/tanyanongera-play4thecure/fundraiser/gunnerywestover). This culminated in a Pink-Out night field hockey game where we also played some half time games to fundraise. In total, Westover and Gunnery raised over $2,300.

In 2016 we played a fundraiser game against the boys' hockey team on Sunday October 23rd @4pm. The boys helped the girls fundraise by getting sponsored to play. Our official Play4TheCure game against Westover at Westover was on Saturday October 29th @ 2:30pm. In 2016, The Gunnery on campus donations totaled of $755, and our crowdrise page raised $850 ( https://www.crowdrise.com/westover-and-gunnery-field-hockey), bringing us to a final total of $1603 ($400 below our targeted number).

This year, we hope to surpass both of these numbers. We have various fundraising efforts around campus, as well as help from our partners at Westover. Any donations you are willing and able to give will be greatly appreciated. Many of the girls on our team have been affected by this disease in some way shape or form, and our program would like to do whatever we can to help find the cure.

Founded in 1850 by abolitionist, educator, and outdoorsman Frederick Gunn, The Gunnery is a coeducational college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12/post-graduate. Dedicated teacher-mentor-coaches challenge students to reach their full potential in a home-like setting where character and citizenship are valued as much as intellect and achievement. Individualized attention and high expectations help young learners develop not only the skills and confidence they will need in college, but also the moral compass and love of learning that will serve them well in life. The school attracts ambitious, academically curious students who will both shine as unique individuals and thrive as contributing members of a deeply connected community. By the time they graduate, Gunnery students have become well rounded, grounded young adults with a sharpened sense of who they are and who they want to become.
