2017-18 Season Opener Gunner with a 3-2 win over Hotchkiss

Shane C Gorman
Gunnery starts the 2017-18 season with a hard fought win over Hotchkiss in Lakeville, CT this afternoon. Goals were scored by Washco '18, Lapiks '19, and Gatcomb '18 as the game ended in a 3-2 victory for the Highlanders.

Gunnery had an excellent start to the game as they had constant pressure over Hotchkiss. It wasn't until midway through the first period when Albert Washco scored a shorthanded break away goal on a turnover from the highlanders end. A few shifts later Lapiks capitalzed on a back door pass from Rayhill to make it 2-0 Gunnery.

The second period consisted of many special teams play as Hotchkiss answered the bell to cut their deficit in half. Gunnery responded minutes later with a bar down shot from Gatcomb making it 3-1.

The third period was back and forth as Hotchkiss scored one more. Many chances for both teams, but Gunnerys goalie JP Mella closed the door as the Highlanders took their first win of the season.

Gunnery continues play this weekend with a 1-0 record as they travel to the Exeter Prep Pot Invitational showcase on Dec. 2 and 3. Gunnery faces off against host Exeter at 5:30 pm Saturday night and New Hampton Sunday at 12:00 pm.

Founded in 1850 by abolitionist, educator, and outdoorsman Frederick Gunn, The Gunnery is a coeducational college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12/post-graduate. Dedicated teacher-mentor-coaches challenge students to reach their full potential in a home-like setting where character and citizenship are valued as much as intellect and achievement. Individualized attention and high expectations help young learners develop not only the skills and confidence they will need in college, but also the moral compass and love of learning that will serve them well in life. The school attracts ambitious, academically curious students who will both shine as unique individuals and thrive as contributing members of a deeply connected community. By the time they graduate, Gunnery students have become well rounded, grounded young adults with a sharpened sense of who they are and who they want to become.
