It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s the International Space Station!

Science Department Chair Steve Bailey and about 30 students at The Gunnery caught sight of the International Space Station moving fast across the sky on Wednesday, May 23 at about 8:43 p.m.
“It was a perfect lineup,” Bailey said, explaining that the Space Station was visible to the naked eye for about six minutes, as it tracked across the sky almost directly over the school. Yamna Abdi Jama ’18 was the first to spot the space station’s glow as it appeared in the southwest sky over Brinsmade dorm. The sun had set about half an hour earlier, at 8:14 p.m., and it was still dusk when the students gathered near “senior rock” on the last day of classes for seniors. Bailey encouraged them to wave to the six astronauts (two Russian, three American, and one Japanese) on board.

Jerry Cheng ’18 had an optimal view of the space station through the lens of his camera and snapped this photo before the craft disappeared over Gunn dorm around 8:49 p.m. If any of the astronauts took photos of North America around the time they flew over The Gunnery, Bailey said he would like to see them. Copy that, NASA?

Founded in 1850 by abolitionist, educator, and outdoorsman Frederick Gunn, The Gunnery is a coeducational college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12/post-graduate. Dedicated teacher-mentor-coaches challenge students to reach their full potential in a home-like setting where character and citizenship are valued as much as intellect and achievement. Individualized attention and high expectations help young learners develop not only the skills and confidence they will need in college, but also the moral compass and love of learning that will serve them well in life. The school attracts ambitious, academically curious students who will both shine as unique individuals and thrive as contributing members of a deeply connected community. By the time they graduate, Gunnery students have become well rounded, grounded young adults with a sharpened sense of who they are and who they want to become.
