  • Basketball - Girls Varsity

    2018 - 2019

Welcome to The Gunnery Girls Basketball Program.  The Gunnery has maintained a girls’ basketball program since becoming coed in 1978. We are a member of Class D within NEPSWBCA (based on the size of our female population).  Our program consists of a JV and Varsity team and can accommodate athletes at all levels. The program places an emphasis on skill development, teamwork, and good sportsmanship.  Our teams play competitive schedules with opponents including Canterbury, Miss Hall's, Cheshire, KLHT, Chase, Harvey, Stoneleigh-Burnham, Westover, and Millbrook. The Gunnery Varsity Girls Basketball team took its first trip to the Class D New England tournament in 2016 and are eager to get back!

    Our Philosophy
At the Varsity level, a competitive schedule challenges the team to work together and push one another both in games and practices. Teamwork is at the core of the program and is emphasized both on and off the court. As a team we strive to improve both as individuals and as a team, working to build our success over the course of the season.  Hard work and respect for the game are at important parts of every moment we set foot on the court. The average week consists of four (100 minute) practices and two games. Players often live, eat, and go to class together on a daily basis. The team aspect is natural during the winter term, and these players demonstrate that both on and off the court.

  • Teamwork Pays Off in Win

After a slow start, Gunnery took advantage of their speed and teamwork to make a huge 23-0 run to end the first half.  Teamwork and communication were key factors in the run.  Defensively, the Highlanders worked together to eliminate passing options and limit Masters' ability to get the ball over half court, resulting in a couple back court 10 second violations.  On the press junior Cailin Kessman did an incerdible job reading and completing the trap with junior Marley Berano.

Masters chose to closely face guard Berano, some strategic positioning by Berano allowed the remaining Highlanders to spread the court and take advantage of size mismatches, essentially playing 4 v 4 on offense.  Gianna Russillo was particularly frustrating to the Masters defense as she read opportunities well, and  found her teammates with well placed passes.  Pushing the pace of the game, Gunnery was able to tire out the Masters guards, creating additional offensive opportunities.  Seven Gunnery players scored in the victory, led by three players in double figures; Lenaijah Ferguson (17 points), Remay Pemba (15 points), and Marley Berano (10 points).  Also contributing to the scoring was Gianna Russillo, Layla Walcott, Jean Fang, and Cailin Kessman.

The Highlanders are looking forward to their home opener on Wednesday afternoon against Westover.

Founded in 1850 by abolitionist, educator, and outdoorsman Frederick Gunn, The Gunnery is a coeducational college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12/post-graduate. Dedicated teacher-mentor-coaches challenge students to reach their full potential in a home-like setting where character and citizenship are valued as much as intellect and achievement. Individualized attention and high expectations help young learners develop not only the skills and confidence they will need in college, but also the moral compass and love of learning that will serve them well in life. The school attracts ambitious, academically curious students who will both shine as unique individuals and thrive as contributing members of a deeply connected community. By the time they graduate, Gunnery students have become well rounded, grounded young adults with a sharpened sense of who they are and who they want to become.
