  • Cross Country - Girls Varsity

    2018 - 2019

Cross country became a varsity sport at The Gunnery in the early 1960s.  Highlights of the program’s history have been New England divisional championships in 1974 and 1986, and numerous male and female All-New England runners headed by Pat O’Neil, who finished first in the championships in 1973 and 1974.  The yearly schedule includes a combination of six dual, tri, and quad meets.  It opens with the preseason Canterbury Invitational meet which hosts over thirty-five independent school teams from the northeast.  In mid-season the runners race in the eight-team O’Connell Invitational.  The season ends with participation in the Division IV NEPSTA Championships.  The Gunnery is lucky to be adjacent to the Steep Rock Reservation and its many fine trails and dirt roads for running.  There are also numerous roads and trails in other parts of town and the scenic 7.8 mile loop around Lake Waramaug.

  • Gunnery Girl's earn the 10th Place out of 22 Teams at Canterbury

    Morgen Fisher
To complete a wonderful season full of wins, the Gunnery Girls continued their success by earning the 10th place overall in a 22 team field at the New England Championships at Canterbury this past weekend. Both the varsity and jv races indicated significant improvements for the girls over the course of the season. Gianna Russillo earned extra congratulations for placing 5th overall out of 159 girls thus gaining entrance to the Race of Champions next weekend. Gianna has worked hard all season and seemed to enjoy passing out competitors throughout the race. Gunnery will miss our seniors, Jean Fang, Katie Nemergut, and Jasmine Tian next year and I want to congratulate them on capping off a wonderful season!!

Congratulations to the Gunnery for their wins at Westover School!  Thank you to Westover for hosting and setting the competitive bar for this race.  It was a COLD and wet day and there was significant discomfort and injury to overcome in order to earn these successes.  Even those who did not finish in the top 5 or were unable to race remained in good spirits and were hugely supportive of the Gunnery's efforts.  Well done on a difficult day!

Founded in 1850 by abolitionist, educator, and outdoorsman Frederick Gunn, The Gunnery is a coeducational college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12/post-graduate. Dedicated teacher-mentor-coaches challenge students to reach their full potential in a home-like setting where character and citizenship are valued as much as intellect and achievement. Individualized attention and high expectations help young learners develop not only the skills and confidence they will need in college, but also the moral compass and love of learning that will serve them well in life. The school attracts ambitious, academically curious students who will both shine as unique individuals and thrive as contributing members of a deeply connected community. By the time they graduate, Gunnery students have become well rounded, grounded young adults with a sharpened sense of who they are and who they want to become.
