    2017 - 2018

The Soccer Program at The Gunnery is focused on developing young athletes into competitive soccer players by the time they reach the varsity level.  The program stresses the technical, tactical, and physical demands of the game as it is played at the college stage.  By exposing young athletes to these demands early on in the program, the player will find himself better prepared to play at a higher level of soccer.

All practice sessions are geared to improve the player’s foot-skills, placing emphasis on developing the quality of the player’s first touch on the ball.  At the varsity level, higher demands are expected physically and technically from the players.  Players learn to perform under pressure and at game speed.  A variety of team formations are introduced and explained in order to provide the player with a detailed understanding of the tactics of the game.

A required, preseason training program is also an important element to the development of our players. We have specific conditioning and technical exercises that improve the player’s core strength, develop agility, and improve both aerobic and anaerobic fitness levels.

The coaching staff’s objective is to assist hardworking, student athletes in developing into high quality soccer players.  In addition, the overall improvement of the athlete’s physical fitness and coordination will prepare the athlete to be competitive in a variety of sports here at The Gunnery.

  • Highlanders Send Winged Beavers Crashing to the Ground

THe Highlanders went down 0-2 early in the first half, then showed incredible toughness and resilience to battled back. Two goals from Finnish striker Markus Willem, including a scintillating scissor kick in the 20th minute, helped The Gunnery establish themselves in the fixture. They soon gained the lead in the 25th minute when Freshman Erik Gustafson booted one off an Avon defender. In the second half, freshman Jack Gleason scored his first career goal with a brilliant strike from outside the box.  Reached for comment after the match, Jack had this to share about the team's first win. "Coach McMann put me in the middle for the second half to win battle after battle. As a new member of the Highlander Clan, I tried to invoke the tenacity and sheer courage of William Wallace to lead the team forward. It was satisfying win, and I'm thisty for the next encounter of the battlefield."

Founded in 1850 by abolitionist, educator, and outdoorsman Frederick Gunn, The Gunnery is a coeducational college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12/post-graduate. Dedicated teacher-mentor-coaches challenge students to reach their full potential in a home-like setting where character and citizenship are valued as much as intellect and achievement. Individualized attention and high expectations help young learners develop not only the skills and confidence they will need in college, but also the moral compass and love of learning that will serve them well in life. The school attracts ambitious, academically curious students who will both shine as unique individuals and thrive as contributing members of a deeply connected community. By the time they graduate, Gunnery students have become well rounded, grounded young adults with a sharpened sense of who they are and who they want to become.
