    2017 - 2018

The Gunnery Girls' Tennis team consists of about 14 players. We play on eight courts, 4 DecoTurf courts (same surface as the U.S. Open) and 4 Har-tru courts, we are one of the few teams to have both the soft and hard surfaces. The facility is highly regarded and through a wonderful relationship for decades with the Washington Club, we enjoy this special facility.

We play a competitive schedule, including teams such as Hopkins, Berkshire, Millbrook, Ethel Walker, Westover, and Hamden Hall and play in the Suffield tournament in mid-May. The team philosophy is not to just win matches, but to have every girl who participates in the program learn and improve their tennis skills. Some come into the program with very basic tennis skills, and we teach them the sport.  The coaching staff emphasize forehands, backhands, serves, volleys, strategy (especially doubles strategy) as well as court etiquette during practice each day.

The end objective is for each of the players to learn a lifelong sport, potentially play in college, but almost certainly be able to play courteously and well at the club level for the rest of their lives. Team play; a willingness to have fun, and a competitive spirit are key traits of an athlete on the team.  Each athlete is an important member of our team and plays a vital role in the success of the program.

  • Senior Day Triumph!

With decorations and posters honoring our seniors, Noor, Caye, Maggie, and Emeline the GVT team was fired up to play our last match of the season. The weather factored In again and we decided to play 8 game pro-sets with ads on the clay courts to account for the on and off drizzle. We sent our Singles girls our first. 4S Ksenia got to work right away. It was aclose competition at first down a break at coaching, but she was resilient as usual and prevailed 8-5. 3S Margaux got off to a strong start and maintained control even when her opponent began to play better 8-6. 2S Hadley played consistent but took advantage of opportunities to close out points 8-4. 1S Amelie battled game by game until 7-7 when she played an epic tiebreaker that had everyone on edge. Amelie Prevailed winning 19-17 to take the match for the team!

  • Getting closer to a team win

We began this match with our 3 doubles teams taking the court to play an eight game pro-set. All season we have been tinkering with the doubles pairings trying to create the strongest teams and put forth the strongest lineup. Unfortunately our doubles teams continued to struggle with confidence behind their shots. Quickly we found ourselves behind in score on all three courts and ultimately  we lost. This puts tremendous pressure on the singles players. At that point we need to win all four lines or loose the match. 4th Singles, Ksenia was evenly matched and enjoyed a great match with long rallies winning 8-1. 3rd Singles, Margaux played a lefty backboard and was able to beat her opponent by coming to net and closing with strong volleys winning 8-4. 2nd Singles, Hadley found herself down in the set having slowed her strokes down to match her opponents pace. After coaching Hadley was excellent at regrouping and changing the momentum by playing more aggressive points and dictating play winning 8-6. 1st Singles, Amelie had her work cut out for her with a hard hitting aggressive player. Unfortunately, on this day Amelie was unable to offset her opponents power And we lost the match 3-4.

Most notably, #1 Singles Amelie played a strong match using great spin shots which threw off her opponents pace 6-8. #3 Singles Hadley consistently plays very well 5-8. #1 Dubs Hadley/Margaux showed good teamwork and smart doubles tactics 5-8. #5 Singles Ellie was steady and retrieved tons of balls putting up a good fight 4-8. #6 Singles Ksenia was a backboard and gave her opponent a tough match 4-8. The whole team is learning and growing from each match experience!

Freezing cold conditions. Although we played indoor it was not heated on a temporary court surface. This is our first attempt at our lineup and doubles pairings. With little practice due to weather we went into this match optimistic.

Founded in 1850 by abolitionist, educator, and outdoorsman Frederick Gunn, The Gunnery is a coeducational college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12/post-graduate. Dedicated teacher-mentor-coaches challenge students to reach their full potential in a home-like setting where character and citizenship are valued as much as intellect and achievement. Individualized attention and high expectations help young learners develop not only the skills and confidence they will need in college, but also the moral compass and love of learning that will serve them well in life. The school attracts ambitious, academically curious students who will both shine as unique individuals and thrive as contributing members of a deeply connected community. By the time they graduate, Gunnery students have become well rounded, grounded young adults with a sharpened sense of who they are and who they want to become.
