Welcome to The Gunnery Field Hockey program! The Gunnery is a member of the Western New England Prep School Field Hockey Association. Within WNEPSFHA, The Gunnery is classified in the “C” Division, as a school with enrollment of under 120 girls. Currently, the program consists of a varsity and junior varsity squad. Both the varsity and the junior varsity teams play competitive schedules with opponents including The Canterbury School, Millbrook School, Berkshire School, The Ethel Walker School, Suffield Academy, St. Luke’s School, Northfield Mount Hermon School, and Westover School, among others. In recent years, The Gunnery varsity squad has enjoyed much success, capturing the Class C New England Championship in 2012, finishing in second in 2013, and proceeding to the first round of the playoffs in 2015.
Recent graduates have gone on to play at Skidmore College, Connecticut College, Williams College, Providence College, and Salve Regina University. Former captain Mikayla Michals ’16 was selected for the 2017 U.S. U-21 Women’s National Team as a rising junior at Providence College.

The varsity program operates with a simple goal in mind: We look to build a strong and unified team that strives for success in everything we do, be it on or off the field. We strive to not only become a skilled and competitive team on the pitch but also a respectful group of student-athletes that display good sportsmanship and always play with heart and determination. We put scholarship, integrity, respect, and responsibility above all else, and use field hockey as an avenue to instill in each other the four cornerstones of a true Gunnery education. The presence of a junior varsity squad allows us to teach young athletes about the importance of teamwork, personal fitness, determination and the game itself while grooming them for the rigor of a varsity program.

Founded in 1850 by abolitionist, educator, and outdoorsman Frederick Gunn, The Gunnery is a coeducational college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12/post-graduate. Dedicated teacher-mentor-coaches challenge students to reach their full potential in a home-like setting where character and citizenship are valued as much as intellect and achievement. Individualized attention and high expectations help young learners develop not only the skills and confidence they will need in college, but also the moral compass and love of learning that will serve them well in life. The school attracts ambitious, academically curious students who will both shine as unique individuals and thrive as contributing members of a deeply connected community. By the time they graduate, Gunnery students have become well rounded, grounded young adults with a sharpened sense of who they are and who they want to become.
