    2019 - 2020

Welcome to The Gunnery Girls Soccer program! The Gunnery is a member of the New England Prep School Association. Within NEPSAC, The Gunnery is classified in the “C” Division, as a school with enrollment of under 120 girls. Currently, the program consists of only a varsity squad. The team plays a competitive schedule with opponents including The Canterbury School, Millbrook School, The Ethel Walker School, Suffield Academy, St. Luke’s School, Hopkins School, and Westover School, among others.

    Our Philosophy
The varsity girls’ soccer program strives to be a skilled and physically fit team, all while demonstrating good sportsmanship and having fun! Learning the skills to play the game is just as important as learning how to carry oneself as an athlete on and off the field. We ask the athletes to play their heart out each game and “leave it all on the field” as a competitor and hope that this carries into the other aspects of their lives at The Gunnery.

    About Our Coaches
A native of North Branford, Connecticut, this is coach Emily Abelson’s first season as an assistant coach for the Highlander staff. A two-sport athlete at Emmanuel College in Boston, Emily was a four-year starter for women's soccer and was apart of the 2011 inaugural season for the Saints women’s lacrosse team. In 2009, she helped the Saints reach the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) championship game and made an appearance in the program's second Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) match. In addition to coaching soccer, Coach Abelson is an assistant coach for the varsity lacrosse team.

A graduate of the University of Connecticut, Alisa Croft took over as the head coach of the girls' soccer program in the fall of 2001, after one year as an assistant. She spent eighteen years as head coach at The Gunnery has been a very rewarding experience for Coach Croft, as each team has a special quality that makes the girls fun to work with! In 2003 and 2009, the team was given the sportsmanship award, as voted on by state officials. Coach Croft also led the Highlanders to the Western New England Class "D” playoffs in 2006, 2010 and 2011. In addition to coaching soccer, Coach Croft is an assistant coach for the varsity softball team.

  • A hard fought battle in game 1!

In the first game of the season, The Gunnery played to a 0-0 tie with Miss Hall's school. The game was back and forth throughout, and outstanding goal keeping by both keepers kept the shutout for the final score. Maeren Hay '23 saw her first game in goal for The Gunnery, and stayed on her toes for a few key saves! The girls played well as a team, keeping the pressure on the Miss Halls defense, but never finding the back of the net. Chelly Wolff '22 and Estela Jana Salcedo '21 controlled play in the midfield. The teams will face each other later in the season, and we can look forward to another great game!

Founded in 1850 by abolitionist, educator, and outdoorsman Frederick Gunn, The Gunnery is a coeducational college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12/post-graduate. Dedicated teacher-mentor-coaches challenge students to reach their full potential in a home-like setting where character and citizenship are valued as much as intellect and achievement. Individualized attention and high expectations help young learners develop not only the skills and confidence they will need in college, but also the moral compass and love of learning that will serve them well in life. The school attracts ambitious, academically curious students who will both shine as unique individuals and thrive as contributing members of a deeply connected community. By the time they graduate, Gunnery students have become well rounded, grounded young adults with a sharpened sense of who they are and who they want to become.
