    2019 - 2020

Thank you for your interest in the boys’ rowing program. Gunnery rows coxed fours out of the Beebe Boathouse on Lake Waramaug, approximately 10 minutes from campus. In the fall, we compete against high schools, clubs and colleges at the Riverfront Regatta, the Head of the Connecticut, the Head of the Charles as well as the Frostbite and Braxton regattas in Philadelphia. Our spring season includes dual meets and cup races with other NEIRA schools such as Derryfield, Choate, Taft, South Kent, Deerfield, St. Mark’s, Nobles and Berkshire. We host the annual Founder’s Day Regatta on our home course in early May and compete at the NEIRA Championships at the end of our season.

Over the last several years The Gunnery has emerged as a recognized rowing power, finishing in the top six or better at the NEIRAs and placing first in the National Scholastic Championships in 2014.  We have had a number of rowers compete on the US Junior and Senior National Teams and many have forged college careers at the Division I and III level. Over the past decade, the crew program has sent graduates to the University of Washington, Northeastern University, Brown University, Franklin and Marshall, Syracuse University, and Hobart and William Smith, amongst many others.

We are always looking for new rowers and coxswains to join our program. Most of our athletes come to us with no previous experience and we believe that it is our commitment to a strong novice and JV program that allows us to develop the competitive athletes who have contributed the continued success of our team.

Founded in 1850 by abolitionist, educator, and outdoorsman Frederick Gunn, The Gunnery is a coeducational college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 9 through 12/post-graduate. Dedicated teacher-mentor-coaches challenge students to reach their full potential in a home-like setting where character and citizenship are valued as much as intellect and achievement. Individualized attention and high expectations help young learners develop not only the skills and confidence they will need in college, but also the moral compass and love of learning that will serve them well in life. The school attracts ambitious, academically curious students who will both shine as unique individuals and thrive as contributing members of a deeply connected community. By the time they graduate, Gunnery students have become well rounded, grounded young adults with a sharpened sense of who they are and who they want to become.
